A partially decomposed body of an unidentified man has been recovered from a canal in Patiya upazila of Chattogram district, following a call to Bangladesh’s national emergency service, 999.
The discovery was made on Tuesday around 11 a.m. in the Shakya Muni Buddhist monastery area of Bhati Khain Union, when a local fisherman inadvertently came across the remains while retrieving fishing nets from the Chan Khali canal. Shocked by the sight, he immediately alerted emergency responders via the 999 hotline, prompting a swift police response to the scene.
According to police and local sources, the fisherman had set his nets in the canal earlier in the morning as part of his routine fishing activity. Upon returning to collect them, he noticed a body entangled or floating near the nets. Realising the severity of the situation, he refrained from disturbing the scene further and contacted authorities.
Officers from Patiya Police Station later arrived at the location, recovered the body, and secured the area for investigation. The remains were subsequently sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and time of death.
Police have stated that the body was in a highly decomposed state, suggesting it had been in the water for approximately five to six days. Due to the condition of the remains, immediate identification and assessment of potential injuries were not possible at the scene.
The deceased is believed to be a man aged between 45 and 50 years. He was wearing a white shirt at the time of recovery. Authorities have yet to confirm his identity, and efforts are underway to match the description with reports of missing persons in the region.
Post-mortem at Chattogram Medical College Hospital
Patiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ziaul Haque confirmed that the body has been sent for autopsy and said investigators are working to establish the identity of the deceased. He added that all possible angles, including accidental death and foul play, are being considered until the post-mortem report provides clearer evidence.
Authorities have also begun reviewing recent missing persons reports in surrounding areas in an effort to trace the identity of the man and notify his family.
