Police in Chattogram have arrested a local political leader after discovering a cache of foreign-made firearms, ammunition, and custom weaponry inside his residence. The suspect, 43-year-old Nasir Uddin, serves as the president of the Dhalai Union unit of the banned Volunteer League.
A team from Hathazari Police Station carried out the targeted operation in the early hours of Saturday, 26 September 2026, raiding Nasir Uddin’s residence in the Paschim Dhalai area under Hathazari upazila at around 2:30 am.
The raid followed credible intelligence received by law enforcement regarding an illegal stockpile of firearms stored inside the suspect’s family home. Upon cordoning off the building, officers conducted a thorough search of the premises. Inside the main bedroom, police inspected a steel wardrobe, discovering a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, and four rounds of 7.65mm live ammunition hidden inside the upper drawer.
Further examination of the lower drawer yielded a one-shooter gun, locally known as an LG, alongside seven rounds of live shotgun cartridges. Investigators noted that the cartridges bore the inscription “Shaktiman Express Made in India” along their casing.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Media and Traffic) for Chattogram District, Md Russell, confirmed the arrest and recovery of the weapons. During initial interrogation, Nasir Uddin claimed that the seized firearms and ammunition belonged to a friend, Md Taiob, a resident of nearby Raozan upazila. The suspect alleged that Taiob had deposited the weapons at his home three to four months prior before travelling abroad, intending to retrieve them upon his return to Bangladesh.
Hathazari Police Station has formally registered a case under the Arms Act against both Nasir Uddin and the absconding Taiob. Police have remanded the suspect in custody while efforts continue to locate Taiob and trace the origin of the smuggled weaponry.
