A 28-year-old woman in Bangladesh has been taken into police custody after attempting to hang her young child in a desperate bid to force her expatriate husband to return home from abroad. The harrowing incident, which was recorded on video and shared directly with the father, triggered a swift police intervention in Nagarkanda upazila under Faridpur district late on Tuesday night.

The suspect, identified as Bithi Akhtar, was apprehended around 11:30 pm from her residence in Radhanagar village within the Ramnagar union. Officers acting on emergency intelligence also rescued her two young sons, aged nine and seven, taking them into safe police custody.

Trouble escalated on Tuesday evening when video footage showing a woman attempting to place a makeshift noose around a young child’s neck began circulating across social media platforms, sparking outrage among local internet users. Nagarkanda police initiated an immediate investigation upon spotting the content online. The turning point in the rescue operation occurred when the children’s paternal aunt contacted the local police station to provide crucial details regarding the family’s whereabouts, allowing officers to launch an emergency raid.

During initial questioning at the police station, the suspect confessed that her husband, Abbas Ali, had been working in the Maldives for approximately seven years and had repeatedly delayed returning home to his family. Fueled by growing frustration, emotional distress, and anger over his prolonged absence, Bithi resorted to staging the dangerous act against her child. She filmed the ordeal and dispatched the clip to her husband in an attempt to compel his immediate return to Bangladesh.

Officer-in-Charge of Nagarkanda Police Station, Rasul Samdani Azad, confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to determine all surrounding factors and potential motives behind the extreme action. Meanwhile, the two young children remain under protective police care to ensure their physical and psychological safety while legal proceedings against the mother are being finalised.
