A police team faced an attempted assault while attempting to arrest a 21-year-old youth named Himel on charges of attempting to rape an eight-year-old child in the Siddhirganj area of Narayanganj. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening within the residential compound of Sirajul Islam Mondal, a former ward councillor of Ward No. 6 under the Siddhirganj local government administration.
The primary accused youth, identified as Himel, is the son of Md. Salahuddin. The police deployment and subsequent confrontation drew significant attention from the surrounding neighbourhood, exposing local tensions regarding child safety and community-level resistance encountered by law enforcement officers during criminal apprehensions.
According to the official statements and statements collected from the victim’s family, the eight-year-old child had gone outside her residence on Wednesday afternoon. Following her departure, her mother and father noticed her prolonged absence and were unable to locate her despite a thorough search of the immediate vicinity.
The situation changed dramatically towards the evening when the child was observed running back towards her family home in a visibly panicked state. Upon reaching her parents, the child recounted the details of her ordeal and leveled explicit allegations against Himel, describing a sexual assault and attempted rape.
Acting immediately upon the distress call and verbal testimony of their daughter, the child’s mother and father proceeded to the local police station to seek legal recourse. They lodged a formal written complaint detailing the attempted rape against the accused individual at the Siddhirganj Police Station. Upon receiving the written grievance, senior station officers quickly sanctioned an operational unit to locate and apprehend the suspect from his known whereabouts.
Following the lead regarding the suspect’s location, a dedicated contingent of officers from the Siddhirganj Police Station arrived at the residence of the former ward councillor, Sirajul Islam Mondal, where the accused was located. However, as the law enforcement personnel moved to take Himel into custody, his immediate relatives and family members actively resisted the legal procedure.
According to official accounts provided by the police department, the suspect’s relatives rapidly mobilised a crowd of local individuals on the spot. The assembled gathering attempted to launch a physical assault on the on-duty police officers and actively tried to snatch the accused youth away from state custody. Despite the aggressive posture of the crowd and their preparations to execute an assault, the crowd was ultimately unable to overpower the law enforcement team. The operational success was attributed to the strategic presence of additional police personnel within the deployment, which deterred the crowd from carrying out their intended violence.
The Inspector (Investigation) of the Siddhirganj Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, formally confirmed the details of the confrontation and the status of the criminal case. He stated that when the police team attempted to arrest the individual accused of attempting to rape the young child, his relatives assembled a group to stage an attack against the officers.
“When we went to arrest the person accused of attempting to rape a child, his relatives gathered and made preparations to launch an attack on us. However, due to the presence of additional police personnel, they were unable to execute the assault. None of our police members sustained injuries.”
Inspector Mizanur Rahman further confirmed that the law enforcement team successfully managed the volatile situation, secured the perimeter, and safely transported the primary accused youth to the police station. The suspect remains in state custody, and the formal process to initiate mandatory legal proceedings and statutory charges against him under the prevailing criminal laws is currently underway.
