Police Officer Found Dead in Gopalganj Pond; Wife, Father-in-Law Held

Police have recovered the body of a police officer from a pond beside his in-laws’ home in the Paikgachha area of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, with his wife and father-in-law detained for questioning in connection with the incident.

The deceased was identified as BM Mahmudul Islam, 38, son of Haidar Ali Bhuiyan of Bijoypasha village in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. He was serving as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (Armed) with the 6th Armed Police Battalion (APBn) in Khagrachhari.

The body was recovered on Monday morning, 27 July, after local residents reportedly noticed it floating in a pond near the officer’s in-laws’ residence in the Paikgachha area. They informed the police, who subsequently arrived at the scene and recovered the body.

Following the recovery, the body was sent to the morgue of Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death and determine the precise cause.

Police have detained Mahmudul Islam’s wife and father-in-law for questioning as part of the initial investigation. Their detention, however, does not by itself establish any involvement in the death, and investigators are expected to examine all relevant circumstances before drawing conclusions.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam confirmed the incident. He said the actual cause of death would be known after the post-mortem examination. Police are continuing their investigation to uncover the circumstances in which the officer died and to determine whether the death was accidental, suicidal or linked to any criminal activity.

The recovery of the body from a pond near the family residence has drawn attention in the locality, while investigators are expected to question family members and other individuals who may have information about the officer’s movements before his death. Police may also examine the scene and other available evidence as part of the inquiry.

The findings of the post-mortem examination, along with the ongoing police investigation, are expected to provide further clarity on the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details about when or how Mahmudul Islam entered the pond or how long he may have been there before his body was discovered.
