Officers from Dumki Police Station in Patuakhali have recovered the hanging body of a twenty-year-old muezzin from his residential room inside a local mosque. The grim discovery was made on Friday night at the Baitul Mamun Jame Mosque, situated within the Hawladar household premises in North Pangasia village under Dumki upazila.
The deceased, Md Sayeem, served as the muezzin of the mosque. He originally hailed from Jamura village within the Laukathi Union of Patuakhali Sadar upazila, and was the son of Abdul Jabbar Mridha.
The incident came to light shortly before the Isha prayers on Friday evening. Local resident Md Yusuf Hawladar went to Sayeem’s living quarters to check on him as prayer time approached. Finding the young man in an unresponsive and unusual state, Hawladar immediately alerted fellow worshippers and neighbours. Upon entering the room, locals discovered Sayeem’s body suspended by a plastic rope tied to the hook of a ceiling fan. Witnesses noted visible ligature marks around his neck.
Local authorities were swiftly notified, prompting a police team to rush to the scene, secure the area, and retrieve the body. Meanwhile, the family of the deceased, including his brother Kamal Hossain, have contested the initial assumptions, describing the circumstances surrounding his death as deeply suspicious and demanding a thorough investigation.
Dumki Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Selim Uddin confirmed that an initial inquest report was compiled at the scene before the body was dispatched to the morgue at Patuakhali Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police officials stated that a definitive conclusion regarding whether the incident constitutes a homicide or suicide will only be reached once the autopsy findings and comprehensive investigative reports are finalised. Law enforcement agencies have initiated legal procedures to address the incident and establish the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
