Portugal Leave Ronaldo’s International Return Door Open

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has made it clear that Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future remains entirely in the hands of the veteran forward, while leaving the door open for his return to the national side.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen during the current international break, prompting questions over his immediate future with the national team. Despite his departure, Jesus has indicated that he does not view the situation as a permanent rupture and believes Ronaldo could still feature in future squads.

Speaking to RTP after Portugal secured their place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals, Jesus described the circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s departure as a ‘misunderstanding’ rather than a serious dispute. He stressed that the matter could be resolved without difficulty and that there was no lingering resentment towards the captain.

Jesus said he could not predict what would happen next, but insisted that all possibilities remained open. If Ronaldo wanted to continue playing for Portugal and chose to join the next squad, the coach said he would see no reason why that should not happen. The decision, he added, belonged to Ronaldo himself.

The coach was also asked when he expected to resolve the matter directly with Ronaldo. Jesus offered no specific timetable, saying that the latest match had only just finished and that the next steps would become clearer as the situation developed.

Ronaldo’s departure before Portugal’s match against Norway has therefore not been treated by the coaching staff as a signal that his international career is over. Jesus’ comments suggest that the Portugal captain remains a possible option for future selection, should he decide to continue representing his country.

The uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo comes as Jesus has enjoyed a remarkably strong start to his tenure. Portugal have won all four matches since he took charge, giving the coach a perfect opening record.

After the victory over Norway, Jesus said the immediate priority had been to secure the result required to confirm Portugal’s place in the Nations League quarter-finals. He also acknowledged that the Norway match was comparatively less demanding than the team’s encounter with Denmark.

Even with his confidence in the squad, Jesus admitted that he had not expected such a perfect beginning when he started the job. Four victories from four matches have nevertheless reinforced his belief in the team’s ability to compete and achieve its targets.

Portugal still have two matches to play before the next squad is announced, leaving room for the situation surrounding Ronaldo to evolve. His absence would represent a significant change for a side that has relied on his leadership and experience for many years, but Jesus appears determined to keep the focus on the collective strength of the squad.

For now, there is no definitive decision on Ronaldo’s international future. Portugal’s door remains open, while the final choice rests with the player who has been at the centre of the country’s football story for so long.
