The Iranian national football team were ordered to vacate the United States just hours after completing their opening FIFA World Cup fixture, triggering strong criticism from the team’s management and captaincy. The abrupt departure directive gave the squad no time for standard post-match physical recovery, forcing them to fly back to Mexico on Monday night local time.
The development follows a series of stringent logistical and diplomatic challenges imposed upon the Iranian delegation by the host nation. Under the initial regulations, the team was mandated to arrive in the morning and depart the United States on the evening of the same day. While this protocol was modified to permit Iran to enter the country from Mexico 24 hours prior to kick-off, severe visa complications and political pressures persisted throughout the build-up.
Despite these adversities, Iran commenced their campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, twice recovering from a deficit to secure a point. However, the original itinerary, which permitted the squad to remain in California on Monday night to undergo vital post-match recovery, was countermanded by authorities shortly after the final whistle.
The sudden expulsion order provoked sharp criticism from Iran’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, who emphasized the physiological impact of the decision on his athletes.
“They did not even grant us time for physical recovery,” Ghalenoei stated to reporters. “The match had barely concluded when we were told, ‘You must leave right now.’ The post-match recovery process is absolutely critical for the players, yet we are being forced onto a flight and sent back to our camp in Tijuana, 140 miles away. We are genuinely distressed by this treatment.”
The head coach further questioned the underlying motives of the directive, suggesting that external forces were deliberately undermining the team’s tournament campaign.
“To be frank, we do not comprehend why we are being expelled,” Ghalenoei added. “It is highly bizarre. It feels as though our operational plans are being dictated from behind the scenes by someone else. I believe our team is the most oppressed and discriminated against in this World Cup.”
Team captain Mehdi Taremi echoed his manager’s sentiments, expressing profound disappointment regarding the lack of institutional support from football’s global governing body.
“We are being forced to leave Los Angeles immediately, which is completely detrimental to the squad,” Taremi stated. “FIFA should have provided us with greater assistance. At present, everything we face feels like a consecutive disaster.”
Following the execution of the order, the Iranian squad was transferred across the border to their alternative base in Tijuana, Mexico. The operational parameters governing Iran’s group stage workflow highlight the unique constraints placed on the team compared to their Group Stage opponents.
