A fatal road accident in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur has claimed the life of a motorcyclist and left a woman critically injured after a passenger bus struck their vehicle on the busy Dhaka–Rangpur highway. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon (2 April) in the Garer Matha area, triggering panic among local commuters and renewed concerns over reckless driving on one of the country’s major transport corridors.

The deceased has been identified as Anisur Rahman (58), a resident of Rambhadra village under Bamandanga upazila in Gaibandha district. The injured passenger, Fatema Begum (60), is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition. Their exact relationship has not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.

According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, Anisur Rahman was travelling by motorcycle with the woman pillion passenger when they were struck from behind by a Dhaka-bound intercity bus. Witnesses stated that the bus was moving at a high speed and failed to maintain safe distance before colliding with the motorcycle, causing both riders to be thrown onto the roadway.

Locals rushed to the scene immediately after the crash. They reported that Anisur Rahman was run over by the bus wheels and died on the spot due to severe injuries. Fatema Begum sustained serious trauma and was first taken to Mithapukur Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated.

Following the incident, the bus reportedly fled the scene, adding to public anger and complicating immediate identification efforts. Police later arrived at the location, brought the situation under control, and restored normal traffic flow on the highway after a brief disruption.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to identify and locate the bus and its driver. The victim’s body has been recovered and will be handed over to his family after completion of legal procedures, including post-mortem examination.
