Rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of Bangladesh has been completely suspended after a fuel-carrying freight train derailed in Habiganj’s Madhabpur upazila, causing major disruption on two of the country’s key rail corridors.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 pm on Wednesday (1 April) near Monotola Railway Station, when a Chattogram-to-Sylhet bound oil tanker train suddenly derailed while passing through the area. The accident resulted in four fuel tank wagons and a guard brake van leaving the tracks, with several carriages reportedly veering off and crashing into adjacent land and a nearby ditch.
The force of the derailment caused significant damage to sections of the railway line, raising concerns over the extent of infrastructure disruption. Although no casualties have been reported, authorities believe the damage to the track and signalling system may be substantial, requiring extensive repair work before services can resume.
Following the accident, train operations on both the Dhaka–Sylhet and Chattogram–Sylhet routes were immediately suspended. The suspension has effectively severed rail connectivity with Sylhet, leaving passengers stranded and disrupting scheduled services across multiple districts.
Confirming the situation, Station Master Monir Mia of Noapara Railway Station stated that train movement had been halted indefinitely due to safety concerns. He added that railway and police officials swiftly arrived at the scene after receiving reports of the derailment.
A rescue train and technical recovery teams have been dispatched to the location, although operations could not begin immediately due to the scale of the derailment and the complexity of handling fuel tank wagons.
The sudden suspension has caused significant inconvenience for passengers travelling across the affected routes. Many commuters were left stranded at intermediate stations, while others faced delays and uncertainty about onward travel.
Railway officials have acknowledged the disruption and stated that efforts are underway to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. However, they emphasised that safety remains the top priority, particularly given the involvement of petroleum-carrying wagons, which require careful handling to prevent environmental hazards or secondary incidents.
