A joint operation conducted by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj upazila has led to the recovery of a locally made firearm, ammunition, and magazines from a cemetery, though no arrests have yet been made in connection with the incident.
The seizure took place on Wednesday at the Babupur Miratuli village cemetery, located in Noyalavanga Union of the upazila. According to RAB officials, the operation was launched following information provided by local residents regarding suspicious activity in the area.
Acting on the tip-off at approximately 6:45 p.m. on 29 April, a RAB team searched the cemetery premises. During the sweep, personnel discovered a suspicious cloth-wrapped bag concealed near the south-western boundary of the burial ground. Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain illegal weapons and ammunition.
Officials confirmed that the recovered items included a country-made firearm, two magazines, and ten rounds of live ammunition. The items were immediately seized and later handed over to Shibganj Police Station for further legal procedures and investigation.
RAB-5, Chapainawabganj camp, stated in an official press release that intelligence surveillance in the area has been intensified following the recovery. Authorities are currently attempting to identify those responsible for storing the weapons in the cemetery and to determine whether the cache is linked to any organised criminal activity or smuggling network operating in the region.
Law enforcement sources indicated that such recoveries are part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms circulation in border-adjacent districts, where smuggling routes have historically posed security challenges.
