The Bangladesh Premier League auction opened with a sense of anticipation, and the excitement intensified almost immediately when Liton Das—Bangladesh’s T20 skipper and one of the country’s finest stroke-makers—became the second player to go under the hammer. His explosive half-century against Ireland the previous evening had already heightened expectations, positioning him as a marquee figure in the auction.
Speculation had been swirling for days that Liton would trigger a fierce bidding battle between franchises eager to secure a proven match-winner. His range of skills—sharp wicketkeeping, elegant yet aggressive batting, and invaluable leadership experience—made him a dream signing. Yet, the auction took an unexpectedly calm turn. Rangpur Riders acted swiftly and sealed his signing for 7 million Taka, a price that many analysts believe is far below what his profile could have warranted in a more competitive setting.
Liton’s move marks a significant shift, as he previously captained Comilla Victorians with considerable success. His leadership qualities, combined with his ability to perform under pressure, provide Rangpur with a stabilising force at the top of their line-up. In essence, Rangpur opened their auction campaign with a resounding six.
The Riders capitalised on this momentum by pursuing Towhid Hridoy, another highly rated Bangladeshi batter. Beginning at a modest base of 3.5 million Taka, Hridoy’s price quickly climbed before Rangpur clinched him for 9.2 million Taka. Liton’s base price stood at 5 million Taka in the ‘A’ category, making both signings look strategically sound and financially efficient.
Prior to the auction, Rangpur had already secured national stars Mustafizur Rahman and Nurul Hasan Sohan via direct signing, demonstrating forward planning and clarity in their squad-building strategy. Their foreign recruits, Khawaja Nafay and Sufiyan Muqeem, add further depth and variety to the squad.
As the auction continues, Rangpur Riders have already positioned themselves as early winners. Their squad now boasts a blend of experience, leadership, and youthful energy—qualities that could prove decisive when the tournament begins.
