Ravi Shankar Controversy: Disputed Discipleship Sparks Debate

A heated debate has recently emerged in the realm of Indian classical music surrounding the discipleship of the legendary sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Young sitarist Rishabh Rikhiram has been publicly presenting himself as the “principal and closest disciple” of Shankar, both during concerts and across social media platforms. This claim has been firmly refuted by Shankar’s daughter and internationally acclaimed sitarist Anoushka Shankar.

Speaking during her recent tour of India, Anoushka clarified that Rishabh Rikhiram had never undergone formal or extended tutelage under her father. She emphasised that Rikhiram’s true guru is Parimal Sodafal, a recognised disciple of Ravi Shankar. Anoushka elaborated that brief or informal interactions—even within familial or social contexts—do not meet the rigorous standards of traditional guru–shishya (teacher–disciple) lineage.

In Hindustani classical music, the guru–shishya relationship transcends mere instruction; it embodies deep ethical, cultural, and musical responsibilities. Formal discipleship entails years of intensive practice, personal initiation, and continuous mentorship under the guru’s direct guidance. Occasional advice or social proximity, no matter how intimate, does not confer this status. Anoushka’s statement highlights this subtle yet crucial distinction, underscoring the importance of preserving the sanctity of the musical lineage.

Ravi Shankar elevated the sitar to global prominence, performing repeatedly across Europe and North America and collaborating with numerous Western musicians. Today, Anoushka Shankar carries forward this legacy, with multiple Grammy nominations and extensive international performances and recordings.

Rishabh Rikhiram comes from a musically connected family; his father, Sanjay Rikhiram Sharma, belongs to a distinguished lineage of instrument makers in Delhi. According to Anoushka, this social and familial connection may have contributed to public misconceptions regarding a formal guru–disciple bond.

During her Indian tour, Anoushka performed in six cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. She described her final concert in Kolkata as “dreamlike,” featuring guest appearances by popular singer Arijit Singh, which added a contemporary dimension to the classical repertoire.

This controversy has reignited discussions within the classical music community on the definitions, transparency, and ethical standards of discipleship. In a culture where a guru–shishya relationship forms the very core of an artist’s identity, claims of formal discipleship carry not only cultural but also professional significance.
