Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, holding on to their lead despite being reduced to 10 players following the dismissal of Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian forward had a goal ruled out after a video assistant referee (VAR) review before receiving a straight red card for pulling the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba.
The incident threatened to derail Real’s evening at the Santiago Bernabéu, but the home side defended resolutely to claim three important points. The result kept them third in the league standings, six points behind leaders Barcelona.
Real struggled to establish their attacking rhythm during the first half. Kylian Mbappé created several promising opportunities but could not find the net. One of his efforts struck the post, while Villarreal goalkeeper Peter Gulácsi produced a series of impressive saves to deny the hosts.
Villarreal’s disciplined defending frustrated Real for much of the opening period, and neither side managed to break the deadlock before half-time. The hosts, however, returned with greater attacking intent after the interval and eventually found the breakthrough.
The decisive moment arrived when Yan Diomande collected a pass from Federico Valverde and sent a low shot towards the far post, beating Gulácsi to give Real the lead. The young Ivory Coast forward’s strike was his first goal for the Madrid club, making it a significant personal milestone as well as a crucial contribution to the team’s victory.
Real subsequently looked to extend their advantage. Substitute Vinícius appeared to have done just that when he found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR intervention.
Referee Isidro Díaz de Mera reviewed footage of an incident involving Vinícius and Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba. The review showed the Brazilian pulling Saliba’s hair before scoring. The referee ruled out the goal and issued Vinícius a straight red card, leaving Real with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
The dismissal forced Real to change their approach. Rather than continuing to press for a second goal, the hosts concentrated on protecting their narrow advantage as Villarreal sought to exploit their numerical superiority.
Villarreal increased the pressure in search of an equaliser, testing Real’s defensive organisation. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois proved instrumental in preserving the lead, reacting sharply to deny an effort from Carlos Romero. His intervention prevented the visitors from drawing level at a critical stage of the contest.
Mbappé had a late opportunity to add a second goal for Real, but he was unable to beat Gulácsi. The home side therefore had to rely on Diomande’s strike, which ultimately proved enough to secure victory.
The result lifted Real to third place in the La Liga standings, leaving them six points behind Barcelona. Although the victory kept them in contention, Vinícius’s dismissal overshadowed much of the post-match discussion. The incident could also have implications for the club’s upcoming fixtures, depending on the disciplinary outcome.
Barcelona, meanwhile, strengthened their position at the top of the table with a convincing 3-0 victory over Getafe. The reigning champions have won all eight of their opening league matches, maintaining a perfect record and establishing an early advantage over their rivals.
Atlético Madrid remained second after defeating Alavés 2-1, leaving them five points behind Barcelona. Their victory ensured that the pressure on the leaders continued, even as Barcelona maintained their impressive early-season form.
The contrasting results highlight the competitive nature of the title race. Barcelona have set a demanding pace through their consistency, while Atlético remain within striking distance and Real continue to collect points despite occasional setbacks.
For Real, the victory over Villarreal demonstrated their ability to withstand pressure in difficult circumstances. However, the loss of Vinícius during a closely contested match also exposed the challenges they may face when key attacking players are unavailable. With the season still unfolding, maintaining consistency and avoiding unnecessary disciplinary setbacks will remain important as the race for the La Liga title develops.
