A mosque imam in Bakerganj, Barishal, has been accused of living with a married woman for nearly seven months without marrying her. Police rescued the pair after local residents and relatives of the woman’s first husband reportedly caught them together. They were later handed over to their respective families after signing written undertakings, police said.
The incident took place on Wednesday, 7 October, in Dariyal Union of Bakerganj Upazila, Barishal district.
The imam has been identified as Abdullah Tuhin, son of Abdul Kashem, from Mostofapur village in Neelganj Union of Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali. At the time of the incident, he was serving as the imam of Banglabazar Jame Mosque in Dariyal Union.
According to local sources, Tuhin married a woman from a neighbouring village around five years ago. However, while working as an imam at a mosque in Majidpur village in Patuakhali, he reportedly developed a close relationship with a woman who lived in a house near the mosque.
The woman was also married at the time. Local accounts suggest that she subsequently left her husband and household to live with Tuhin.
The pair reportedly moved to Dariyal Union around seven months ago. After taking up his position at Banglabazar Jame Mosque, Tuhin allegedly rented a house beside the mosque and began living there with the woman.
Their living arrangements eventually came to the attention of local residents and relatives of the woman’s first husband. They reportedly detained the pair before informing the police.
Police officers subsequently arrived at the scene and rescued them. According to the police, neither party lodged a complaint, and both individuals were released into the custody of their respective families after providing written undertakings.
Bakerganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Adil Hossain confirmed the incident. He said police had gone to the location after receiving information about the matter and had taken the pair into their care. As no one had filed a complaint, they were released after signing the undertakings and handed over to their families.
Tuhin’s response to the allegations was not available at the time of reporting. The circumstances surrounding the alleged relationship and the pair’s living arrangements have therefore been described on the basis of information provided by local sources.
No further details about a formal case or any subsequent investigation were available in the initial report. The police account indicates that the immediate matter was resolved through the release of the two individuals to their families, rather than through a reported criminal case.
