Remembrance – Vaishnav Poet Radharaman Dutta

Among those whose creative light continues to shine brightly in the sky of Bengali folk music, Radharaman Dutta stands out as one of the most remarkable figures. Renowned as the founder of Dhamaail songs, this great saint-poet did not merely compose music; he established a unique tradition of Bengali folk culture, love, devotion, and spirituality.

He was born on 25 May 1833 in the village of Keshabpur, within the Atuajaan pargana of Jagannathpur upazila in the Sunamganj district, into a distinguished family. His father, Radhamadhab Dutta, and his mother, Surbana Devi, were both cultivated and intellectually inclined individuals. From early childhood, he was deeply exposed to music, literature, and spiritual practice within his family environment.

From his adolescence, he was drawn to the search for the mysteries of creation and the nature of the Creator. In his quest to understand the meaning of life, he travelled in the company of saints and sages, absorbing their teachings with devotion. Later, he became a disciple of the mystic Raghunath Goswami of Dheu Pasha village in Moulvibazar. After extensive study of Shakta, Vaishnava, and Shaiva philosophies, he devoted himself to the practice of Sahajiya spirituality.

In the secluded natural surroundings of the Naluar haor wetlands, he built a small thatched hut and spent long periods immersed in spiritual practice and devotional music. Filled with love for Krishna, he composed numerous verses, bhajans, and folk songs. His songs were spontaneous expressions of the heart—he would sing in deep emotional absorption, while his disciples would transcribe them. For this reason, no manuscripts written in his own hand have been found.

Radharaman’s creations were influenced not only by Vaishnav devotion but also by the humane and loving philosophy of Sufism. In his songs, love appears sometimes as human affection, sometimes as divine devotion; at times it reflects the union and separation of Radha and Krishna, and at other times it expresses the yearning of the human inner world.

Even today, no Bengali wedding celebration feels complete without Dhamaail songs in rural Bengal. His music remains widely popular across radio, television, and cultural platforms in both Bengals. In recent times, his songs have also reached new generations through Bengali cinema and modern musical arrangements.

In his personal life, he was the father of three sons. However, the sudden deaths of his wife and two sons brought profound grief into his life. This sorrow led him towards renunciation of worldly life, and he became even more deeply immersed in spiritual practice and devotional music.

His eldest son, Bipin Bihari Dutta, later settled permanently in Bhujbal village in Moulvibazar. His descendants still live in that region today, continuing to preserve the memory of Radharaman.

The great poet was laid to rest in his birthplace, Keshabpur village. His mausoleum remains a deeply emotional place of remembrance for devotees, researchers, and lovers of culture. For many years, a caretaker named Nidungmoni Das diligently maintained the shrine, and at present Anita Rani Malakar continues this responsibility.

On 10 November 1915, this shining star of Bengali folk music departed from the mortal world. Yet his songs, his philosophy, and his world of devotional love remain immortal in the hearts of the Bengali people.

“Bhomor koiyo gia, Shri Krishna bicheder anole anga jaay jolia”—

This single line alone proves that Radharaman Dutta was not merely a folk poet; he was a timeless voice of the Bengali heart.
