Police in Barishal city have recovered the bound body of a retired primary school teacher from her rented flat in the early hours of Thursday, 31 October.

The deceased, identified as 65-year-old Amena Khanam, hailed from Mehendiganj Upazila within the district. She was living alone in a second-floor flat in the Khalpar area along Bhati Khana Rokeya Azim Road, situated under the jurisdiction of the Kaunia Police Station. Her only son, Rifat, resides in Dhaka where he works as an officer at a private bank.

The landlord, Rina Begum, disclosed that Amena Khanam had been residing as a tenant in the building for the past year. Alarm was raised late on Wednesday evening when neighbours on the same floor noticed a foul odour emanating from the locked premises. Suspecting foul play, residents promptly contacted her son in Dhaka, who subsequently notified local authorities.

A contingent from Barishal Metropolitan Police arrived at the scene around 4:30 am on Thursday. Upon breaking the lock to gain access, officers discovered the teacher’s body lying on her bed, with her hands and feet tightly bound using cloth.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Sushanta Sarkar confirmed the sequence of events, stating that officers responded immediately after receiving the distress call from the victim’s son. The condition of the body indicated that the murder had taken place a few days prior to its discovery.

Police have dispatched the corpse to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy to ascertain the exact cause and time of death. Forensic experts and crime scene investigators have gathered physical evidence from the flat to aid the probe. While no arrests have been made so far, law enforcement agencies have initiated a detailed investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime.
