Runa Laila Receives Global Honour

Veteran singer Runa Laila, one of the most influential vocalists from the subcontinent, has described a recent international recognition as an accolade that “belongs to the people”, underscoring her deep connection with her country and audience. Over a career spanning decades, she has helped introduce Bangla music to wider global audiences while maintaining her status as a cultural icon in Bangladesh.

The honour will be formally presented at a cultural festival scheduled to open on 4 May at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in Delhi. The event will continue until 8 May, when the award ceremony is expected to take place, bringing together artists and cultural figures from across the region.

Reflecting on the recognition, Laila said she viewed it not as a personal achievement alone but as a tribute to Bangladesh itself. She expressed pride in receiving the honour as a Bangladeshi artiste and extended her gratitude to the organisers, noting that she had been formally informed of the award through a letter from festival chairman Ram Kishore.

Beyond the award, the celebrated singer also spoke about her continuing musical journey and an upcoming release that highlights her evolving artistic range. The project, initially conceived as a solo piece, ultimately developed into a duet featuring composer and singer Bappa Mazumder. According to Laila, Mazumder was initially hesitant about sharing vocals with her, but she encouraged the collaboration, resulting in what she described as a creatively fulfilling partnership.

The song is noted for its contemporary arrangement blended with subtle ghazal influences, marking a stylistic exploration for the veteran performer. Laila remarked that this was the first time she had worked within such a musical structure, adding that both composition and lyrical quality came together harmoniously. The track has been written by Galib Hasan, with composition and musical direction by Bappa Mazumder.

She also reflected on her ongoing engagement with live performance, stating that her ability to continue singing is a blessing. Recently, she performed in Sylhet, delivering a stage appearance lasting approximately an hour and a half, which she described as a deeply satisfying experience.
