Dr Md Sakhawat Hossain, a long-serving and distinguished official of the research wing of Bangladesh Bank, has been promoted to the position of Executive Director (Research). He formally assumed his new responsibility on Wednesday, moving up from his previous role as Director of the Research Department.
The promotion is widely seen as a recognition of his extensive contribution to central bank research, policy analysis, and macroeconomic stability assessment over more than three decades of service. According to relevant sources, his elevation reflects both his professional expertise and his sustained role in strengthening evidence-based policy formulation within the central bank.
Dr Hossain began his career at Bangladesh Bank in 1994 as an Assistant Director. Over his approximately 32-year career, he has served in multiple key divisions, including the Research Department, the Policy Analysis Unit, and the Office of the Chief Economist. His work has consistently focused on macroeconomic research, monetary policy analysis, and external sector stability, areas critical to the country’s financial governance framework.
Between June 2019 and February 2024, he served as a faculty member at the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy. In this capacity, he was actively involved in training newly recruited officers in economic research methodologies and policy analysis techniques, contributing to the development of future economists and policymakers within the institution.
Academically, Dr Hossain holds both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Economics from Jahangirnagar University. He later completed his PhD in Economics, with his doctoral research focusing on Bangladesh’s import and export demand structure as well as the stability of the balance of payments. His scholarly work includes several research publications in both domestic and international academic journals, many of which have informed policy discussions in relevant economic forums.
Throughout his career, he has undertaken professional visits to several countries, including Singapore, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. These international exposures enabled him to gain comparative insights into global monetary policy frameworks and banking practices, which he has integrated into his analytical work in Bangladesh.
Born in Silimpur village under Kalihati upazila in Tangail district, he is the son of Ahsan Ullah and Shuria Begum. In his personal life, he is married; his spouse, Hossne Ara Mostafa, previously served at BASIC Bank Limited and retired voluntarily in 2022 as an Executive Manager. The couple has two sons and one daughter.
His promotion is expected to further strengthen Bangladesh Bank’s research capacity, particularly in areas related to macroeconomic analysis and policy formulation.
