A Dhaka court has granted a fresh four-day police remand for GM Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the death of his second wife, Moriyom Khatun. The ruling arrived on Thursday afternoon after detectives informed the court that the lawmaker had deliberately evaded critical questions during his initial round of police interrogation.
The decision was handed down by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain following a hearing in the presence of the accused MP. Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin of the Detective Branch (Tejgaon Zonal Team), who serves as the primary investigating officer, had originally applied for a seven-day extension. In his submission, Inspector Salahuddin noted that while the lawmaker underwent an initial four-day remand, he withheld crucial details regarding the domestic disputes preceding the tragedy.
The investigation stems from the discovery of 19-year-old Moriyom Khatun’s body on the evening of 20 September. Law enforcement officers retrieved her hanging body from flat number 203, situated on the third floor of Building 5 within the NAM MP Hostel complex in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The apartment door was locked from the inside, prompting police to seek assistance from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to break into the room. Forensic teams recovered handwritten notes from the scene, which are currently undergoing analysis.
Following the recovery of the body, the victim’s father, SM Masum Billah, lodged a formal case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, alleging abetment of suicide. The complaint named three individuals: MP GM Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam, and Obaidur Rahman—who is Moriyom’s uncle and the MP’s personal driver. Police arrested Nazrul Islam and Maksuda Islam shortly after the case was registered. Obaidur Rahman was subsequently apprehended and remanded to judicial custody on 23 September.
This second remand follows an earlier court order on 21 September, which granted a four-day interrogation period for Nazrul Islam and a single day for Maksuda Islam. Investigators maintain that while the initial legal filing centers on abetment of suicide, the victim’s family suspects foul play and considers the death a pre-meditated murder linked to underlying family conflicts.
Addressing reporters after his previous remand hearing on 21 September, Nazrul Islam rejected the allegations against him, asserting his innocence and claiming that Moriyom took her own life voluntarily. Detective Branch officials stated that the extended interrogation period will allow investigators to cross-examine his statements against forensic evidence, recovered notes, and information provided by co-defendants.
