In a moment that united national pride, educational mentorship, and diplomatic encounters, a Bangladeshi-origin officer of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) recently met with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarik Rahman, outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The brief encounter occurred while Officer Rusme Rose was on duty during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting holds deep significance for Officer Rose, who expressed that conversing with the Bangladeshi Prime Minister had been a lifelong dream. Upon learning that Rose originates from the Katnarpara neighbourhood of Bogura, Prime Minister Rahman expressed his delight, pausing his schedule to converse with her and enquire about her well-being and career in the United States.

Rose and her younger sister, Roshana, both emigrated to the United States after spending their formative years in Bogura. They are the daughters of the late Mahfuza Ara Miva, a prominent social worker, NGO executive, and former Executive Director of the non-governmental organisation PACED in Bogura.

The story came to light after a former academic tutor from Bogura, who taught both sisters over two decades ago, shared the emotional moment online. Reflecting on Rose’s professional milestone, the educator recalled teaching her roughly 22 to 23 years ago, expressing immense pride at seeing a former student rise to a senior rank within one of the world’s premier law enforcement agencies.
