The ongoing T20 World Cup has seen a significant adjustment in its semi-final schedule, accompanied by detailed clarifications from the organisers. Co-host nation Sri Lanka now has the potential to play a semi-final on home soil, contingent upon both its own progress and the outcomes of other key fixtures, particularly those involving Pakistan.
Following the conclusion of the Super 8 stage, the tournament organisers circulated an official communication outlining the semi-final venues and conditions. According to this guidance, the first semi-final has been designated as “floating”, meaning it will be held either in Colombo, Sri Lanka, or Kolkata, depending on which teams advance.
The conditions for the semi-final venues are as follows:
| Scenario | Semi-Final 1 Venue | Semi-Final 2 Venue |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan reaches semi-final | Colombo | Mumbai |
| Pakistan fails, Sri Lanka reaches (opponent ≠ India) | Colombo | Mumbai |
| Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka fail | Kolkata | Mumbai |
| India reaches semi-final (opponent ≠ Pakistan) | Mumbai | Other semi-final per schedule |
| India vs Pakistan semi-final | Colombo | Mumbai |
| Neither India, Pakistan, nor Sri Lanka reach | Group 1 champion vs Group 2 runner-up: Kolkata | Group 2 champion vs Group 1 runner-up: Mumbai |
Crucially, both Sri Lanka and Pakistan are placed in Super 8 Group 2, which precludes the possibility of a semi-final clash between them.
Originally, the November schedule had designated Colombo as the venue if Pakistan advanced to the semi-finals or final. However, the scenario in which Sri Lanka advanced while Pakistan did not had remained ambiguous. The new clarification removes this uncertainty.
For Sri Lanka, the implications are clear: if they reach the final four and their opponent is not India, they will enjoy the advantage of playing on home soil. Nonetheless, the final arrangement depends entirely on the outcomes of the Super 8 matches.
This mid-tournament adjustment demonstrates the organisers’ efforts to balance competitive fairness with logistical considerations, while also giving co-host Sri Lanka a tangible advantage should they reach the semi-final stage under the specified conditions.
