Senior Awami League Official SM Farooq Hossain Detained in Faridpur

Police authorities in Faridpur have apprehended SM Farooq Hossain, a prominent Awami League official and former local council chairman, following a targeted operation linked to an ongoing anti-terrorism investigation.

Mr Hossain, who served as the finance secretary for the Boalmari Upazila branch of the Awami League and formerly headed the Ghoshpur Union Parishad, was taken into custody late on Wednesday evening. Operational units intercepted him near the Bhimpur Market area under Ghoshpur Union following specific intelligence regarding his whereabouts.

Extent of Criminal Charges

According to formal statements issued by the Boalmari Police Station, the politician is embroiled in at least six distinct criminal proceedings. These charges encompass grave offences under the Anti-Terrorism Act, alongside allegations involving unlawful explosives and homicide.

Police documentation reveals that a key case under the Anti-Terrorism Act was lodged against Mr Hossain at Boalmari Police Station in 2025, detailing allegations of organized violence and intimidation. In addition, the suspect is a primary named accused in an explosives-related case filed in the adjacent Alphadanga Upazila, which stems from incidents following the nationwide political upheaval of 5 August. Authorities further noted his formal inclusion in four other heavy criminal dockets, most notably a landmark double murder case under active investigation.

Local Malpractice Allegations

The arrest has drawn widespread reaction from local political figures. Nazrul Islam, a leader representing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Ghoshpur Union, accused the former chairman of leveraging political influence to run an extensive local criminal enterprise.

Local political opposition representatives alleged that Mr Hossain’s tenure was marked by:

• Unlawful Sand Mining: Systematically controlling illegal sand extraction sites (balumahals) along local riverbanks.

• Property Seizure: Forcibly usurping private landholdings and state-owned wetland fisheries (beels).

• Electoral Misconduct: Spearheading voter intimidation and rigging operations at local polling booths.

• Political Patronage: Utilizing his close alliance with former Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman to secure immunity from law enforcement.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalmari Police Station, Mostafizur Rahman, confirmed the arrest and reaffirmed the department’s intent to process the suspect through the formal judicial mechanism without delay.

“The former chairman, long identified as a key ringleader behind regional unlawful activities, was successfully apprehended during Wednesday night’s operation,” stated OC Mostafizur Rahman. “With six serious cases pending against him, including anti-terrorism charges, the police will present him before the Judicial Court of Faridpur on Thursday.”
