Due to an acute shortage of wholesale buyers and a rapid depreciation of market values, a massive volume of sacrificial cattle and goat skins has remained entirely unsold across various trading points.

Local sellers, seasonal traders, and administrators of Islamic religious schools (madrasas)—who traditionally rely on hide donations to fund their charitable operations—have expressed profound distress after failing to secure even the baseline cost for their collected commodities.

The severe market stagnation was visible across multiple locations within the upazila from midday until late evening on Thursday, 28 May 2026. A particularly grim scenario developed at the Tarash Central Eidgah Field, a primary temporary aggregation point for the trade. Faced with a complete absence of wholesale merchants, numerous retail sellers and seasonal collectors ultimately abandoned their piles of raw hides on the open ground and departed the venue empty-handed.

Severe Price Depreciation and Trading Stagnation

According to field reports from local sources, a highly disproportionate pricing structure emerged during the early afternoon hours. Raw hides obtained from large cattle valued between 150,000 and 200,000 Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) were being traded at nominal rates ranging from a mere BDT 600 to BDT 800 per piece. However, as twilight approached, the shortage of commercial buyers grew progressively more acute, completely freezing any remaining trading activity.

By 9:00 pm, vast mounds of cattle and goat skins lay entirely abandoned and piled high across the Tarash Central Eidgah Field. Seasonal hide merchants operating in the grassroots market have indicated that they lacked the financial confidence to procure significant quantities of stock due to a total absence of purchasing mandates or demand from central wholesale depots, locally known as mokams. This central supply chain freeze has had an immediate, adverse domino effect on regional rural markets.

Statement from the Field: Mofiz Uddin, a veteran hide trader operating within Tarash, clarified the structural reasons behind the localized market failure: “Owing to a variety of ongoing disruptions within the international leather market, the central commercial depots have drastically reduced their demand for raw hides. Consequently, small-scale traders like ourselves simply cannot risk capital to buy significant volume. Even the major wholesale syndicates have adopted a similar restrictive strategy, which has triggered this sharp crash in domestic prices.”

The financial impact has heavily burdened local citizens who expected to channel the economic value of their sacrificial hides into charitable causes. Abul Kalam Azad, a resident of Tarash, recounted his personal experience: “A group of us jointly purchased and sacrificed a large breeding bull worth BDT 240,000. Yet, when I arrived at the commercial grounds to sell the hide, there was not a single wholesale buyer present to offer a quote. Madrasas Burdened by Preservation and Preservation Inexperience

As private buyers exited the market, an overwhelming volume of raw hides was redirected as charitable donations to religious seminaries. However, this sudden influx has placed local madrasa authorities under intense logistical and financial pressure due to an acute shortage of preservation salt and a lack of technical expertise in raw hide curing.

Maulana Ramzan Ali, a senior instructor at the local Darul Uloom Qawmia Madrasa, detailed the institutional challenges currently being faced:

• Excessive Untreated Inventory: The seminary received an unprecedented volume of hide donations as a direct consequence of the commercial market collapse.

• Inadequate Preservation Infrastructure: Staff members are attempting to apply manual salting techniques to halt biological decomposition, but they lack formal training and professional experience in long-term hide preservation.

Accusations of Market Manipulation and Official Interventions

Many local stakeholders and independent observers have attributed the severe drop in prices to unfair market manipulation executed by centralized tanneries and buying syndicates who deliberately suppress prices at the grassroots level during peak slaughter periods.

In response to the growing operational crisis among charitable organizations, Mohammed Abdul Majid, an official representing the Tarash branch of the Islamic Foundation, issued a public statement clarifying the government’s pre-emptive measures.

He noted that exactly three days prior to the commencement of the Eid festival, the Islamic Foundation had executed a coordinated assistance program across the upazila’s madrasas. This initiative included the distribution of raw processing salt alongside the provision of practical training seminars focused on appropriate hide curing and preservation techniques. The official expressed confidence that despite the lack of immediate buyers, the trained madrasa personnel would successfully preserve the stock, thereby protecting the raw commodities from spoilage and preserving their long-term economic value.
