Shariatpur Headmaster Assault Case Filed Against Eight

A legal case has been filed with the Shariatpur Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court following the physical assault of Sujit Karmakar, the headmaster of Damudya Pilot Girls’ High School in the Damudya Upazila headquarters of Shariatpur. The victim himself initiated the legal proceedings as the plaintiff. The lawsuit explicitly names eight individuals as defendants, alongside an additional nine unidentified persons who have been accused in connection with the incident.

Charges and Judicial Orders

The accused individuals face serious allegations of extortion and assault committed with the intent to demand money. On Monday, the presiding judge of the court, Abdullah Al Hasib, formally took the case into compliance and directed the relevant police authorities to register the complaint as a First Information Report (FIR).

The legal action follows an incident on Sunday morning, during which a group of young men intercepted Sujit Karmakar at the school’s entrance gates. The assailants physically barred him from entering the educational premises, assaulted him, and subsequently forced him into a compressed natural gas (CNG) powered auto-rickshaw to remove him from the site. Several video recordings documenting the physical confrontation were captured and subsequently circulated across various social media platforms, drawing public attention.

The verified details regarding the assault, the victim, and the subsequent legal case are compiled in the table below:

Background to the Conflict

According to institutional data provided by the Damudya Police Station and school administration sources, Sujit Karmakar was appointed as the headmaster of Damudya Pilot Girls’ High School in 2013. Two years prior to this incident, a dispute emerged between the headmaster and a local faction over multiple issues. This local faction subsequently raised allegations of harassment against female students against him.

Following the political transition and the fall of the government in 2024, the dispute intensified, resulting in a formal written complaint being lodged against the headmaster with the local administration. Consequently, Sujit Karmakar refrained from visiting the school premises after 18 September 2024, managing his absence through various forms of approved leave.

On Sunday morning, the headmaster attempted to return to his workplace and arrived at the school gates via a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw. Immediately upon disembarking from the vehicle, he was confronted by the youths, who physically assaulted him, prevented him from entering the building, and forced him away. Following the attack, his relatives rescued him and admitted him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for treatment. He filed the court case at noon on Monday after receiving medical care.

Statements from Concerned Parties

Speaking to the news outlet Prothom Alo, the headmaster, Sujit Karmakar, stated: “For a long time, a faction from both inside and outside the school has been applying various types of pressure on me. Members of that circle beat me up severely on Sunday. I have been forced to take legal action against them.”

The plaintiff’s legal counsel, Jasim Uddin, explained the judicial progress: “A case has been filed in court regarding the attack on Sujit Karmakar, the headmaster of Damudya Pilot Girls’ High School. The judge took the case into compliance and ordered an FIR. Eight individuals have been named in the case, and there are nine unidentified accused. We have presented various pieces of information and evidence in court to support the allegations.”

Conversely, the local law enforcement authorities stated that they are waiting for official documentation from the judiciary. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Damudya Police Station, Mohammad Jahangir Alam, noted: “No written complaint has been lodged with the police station so far regarding the attack on the headmaster. I have heard that a case has been filed in court, but no papers from there have reached our hands. If the court directs us to register the case as an FIR, we will take action accordingly.”
