Shoriful Strikes Twice as Bangladesh Challenge Australia

The Bangladesh national cricket team is currently defending a competitive total against Australia in a One Day International (ODI) match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. Having already set a target of 275 runs after scoring 274 for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 50 overs, Bangladesh entered the bowling innings with the clear objective of securing a strategic victory and completing a series whitewash against the visitors.

Chasing a target of 275, the six-time world champions, Australia, initiated their innings confidently, constructing a swift 40-run partnership for the opening wicket. However, the momentum shifted abruptly within the space of just three deliveries due to a precise spell from Bangladeshi pace bowler Shoriful Islam. Shoriful broke the opening stand by dismissing Australian opener Josh Inglis, who was caught out after scoring 21 runs off 12 deliveries, an innings that included four boundaries.

The pressure intensified immediately for the visitors when Matt Renshaw arrived at the crease at number three. Renshaw failed to settle, as he was clean-bowled by Shoriful on only the second delivery he faced, departing for a duck. This double strike reduced Australia from a comfortable 40 for no loss to a precarious 40 for two within three balls.

Bangladesh Innings Breakdown

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision initially seemed risky as the hosts suffered an immediate setback in the opening over of the match. Opener Soumya Sarkar, who had contributed 42 runs in the previous fixture, was dismissed for just 2 runs. Following this early loss, opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim partnered with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to rebuild the innings, puting together a 51-run stand for the second wicket. Tanzid was eventually dismissed for 19 runs, followed shortly by Najmul, who labored to a 50-ball 24 before being caught out, leaving Bangladesh in a difficult position at 61 for three.

The innings was revived through a resilient fourth-wicket partnership between Litton Das and Tawhid Hridoy. The duo accumulated 95 runs from 109 deliveries to stabilize the innings. However, with the team score at 153, Litton was forced to leave the field retired hurt due to physical discomfort. Before his departure, Litton scored a well-crafted 58 runs off 78 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Tawhid Hridoy then anchored the remaining overs alongside Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, combining for a rapid 90-run partnership off 81 balls. Hridoy narrowly missed a century, falling as the fourth batsman at the team score of 246 after scoring a vital 83 runs from 88 deliveries, including eight boundaries. Mosaddek remained unbeaten until the end of the innings, striking 51 runs off 51 balls, accented by five boundaries and a six, to guide Bangladesh to their final total of 274 for five.
