Police in Comilla’s Muradnagar Upazila have arrested six activists belonging to Bangladesh Chhatra League and its associate organisations while they were reportedly preparing to hold an unauthorised political procession and showdown. The arrests took place on Tuesday afternoon, 25 August, in the Alirchar area under Muradnagar Sadar Union. Following the operation, law enforcement officers filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, naming 22 specific individuals alongside 15 to 20 unidentified suspects.

The operation unfolded after police received information regarding an gathering of activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League. A police contingent led by Sub-Inspector Sumon Talukder executed a targeted raid at the Chan Miah Molla Degree College grounds in Alirchar village, where the group had assembled to organize a public demonstration. Officers surrounded the venue and apprehended six individuals from the spot while others managed to flee.

Those taken into custody have been identified as Md. Jahidul Islam, 21, son of Md. Sohel from Machimpur village in Titas Upazila; Md. Ibrahim, 20, son of Julhas Miah, and Nuruzzaman, 21, son of Barek Miah, both hailing from Darimachimpur village in Titas; Md. Sakib, 19, son of Ali Hossain from Gangatia village in Muradnagar’s Jahapur Union; Mehedi Momin Shahed, 22, son of Dulal Miah from Ballabhdi village; and Md. Saiful, 18, son of Mojibur Rahman from Chhaifullakandi village.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Muradnagar Police Station, Mohammad Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, confirmed that formal charges were registered against the detainees under statutory anti-terrorism provisions. The six suspects were produced before a Comilla court on Wednesday afternoon, where magistrate proceedings remanded them to judicial custody.

OC Chowdhury emphasised that police maintain strict vigilance across the upazila to prevent unlawful assemblies, unauthorized political showdowns, and potential disruptions to public order. He added that proactive security operations and intelligence-led raids will continue to ensure public safety throughout the region.

The arrests highlight heightened security measures across Comilla district following political shifts and administrative directives aimed at preventing unsanctioned political rallies by banned or restricted student organisations. Local authorities remain on high alert to curb any attempts at political destabilisation in grassroots areas.
