A twenty-seven-year-old female garment factory worker was brutally murdered following a domestic dispute in the Sreepur upazila of Gazipur. The victim, Nashima Akhter, was repeatedly stabbed with a sharp weapon inside her rented residence in the Gorgoria Masterbari area under the Sreepur municipality. The incident transpired at approximately 3:30 am on Sunday, 12 July 2026. Her husband, Saidul Islam, fled the scene immediately after the assault and remains at large.
Nashima, the daughter of the late Abdur Razzak, originally hailed from Kailashpur Bonpara village in the Purbadhala sub-district of Netrokona. She had relocated to the industrial zone of Sreepur to secure employment as a machine operator in a local ready-made garment factory, striving to co-provide for her family.
The victim’s brother, Masum Ahmed, who also works in the garment sector and resides in a nearby building, was alerted by fellow tenants shortly after the attack. Upon rushing to Nashima’s room, he discovered his sister lying on the floor in a pool of blood, writhing in agony from deep lacerations. Saidul had already escaped the property. With the assistance of neighbours, Masum transported his severely wounded sister to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where the attending medical officer officially pronounced her dead on arrival.
Masum revealed that while the couple initially enjoyed a peaceful marital life, the relationship deteriorated rapidly after Saidul succumbed to severe substance abuse. The addiction triggered chronic domestic disputes, with Saidul frequently subjecting Nashima to physical and mental harassment over financial demands to fund his habit. Despite the recurring domestic turbulence, Nashima chose to sustain the marriage for the sake of their two minor children.
Dr Shafiqul Islam, the Sreepur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that the medical facility immediately notified local law enforcement upon receiving the casualty. A preliminary physical examination revealed multiple deep defensive wounds and sharp-force trauma across the victim’s body, indicating a frenzied attack.
Inspector (Operations) Sanjoy Saha of the Sreepur Police Station stated that a police contingent was dispatched to the crime scene and the hospital during the early hours of Monday. Initial findings indicate that the suspect ensured his wife’s death before fleeing. Investigators are treating domestic discord fuelled by substance abuse as the primary motive for the homicide. The body has been transferred to the Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Law enforcement units have initiated targeted raids to tracking down and apprehend the fugitive husband, while the family prepares to lodge a formal murder case.
