The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially imposed a significant disciplinary sanction on Sri Lanka’s T20 International captain, Dasun Shanaka, following a controversial departure from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in favour of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision concludes weeks of speculation regarding potential repercussions for the veteran all-rounder, who has now been prohibited from participating in the prestigious Pakistani franchise tournament for a duration of one year.
The dispute arose when Shanaka, who was under a binding contract to represent Lahore Qalandars in the current PSL season, abruptly withdrew from the squad. Shortly after his departure, it was revealed that he had signed with the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals. The PCB’s disciplinary committee viewed this move not merely as a change of heart, but as a fundamental breach of the tripartite agreement between the player, the franchise, and the board.
In an official communiqué, the PCB stated that the decision was reached following an exhaustive review of the circumstances. The board emphasised that Shanaka’s unilateral withdrawal constituted a “clear violation of player registration protocols.” As a direct consequence of this ruling, the 34-year-old cricketer will be ineligible for selection or participation in the 2027 PSL season.
The PCB has recently adopted a “zero-tolerance” policy regarding players who abandon their commitments for rival leagues. Shanaka is not the first high-profile international star to face the board’s wrath. Zimbabwean pacer Blessing Muzarabani was recently slapped with a more severe two-year ban after he opted to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman) despite being contracted to Islamabad United.
The following table outlines the recent disciplinary measures taken by the PCB against international players:
| Player Name | Primary Franchise | Rival League Joined | Sanction Imposed | Duration |
| Dasun Shanaka | Lahore Qalandars | Rajasthan Royals (IPL) | 1-Year Ban | Through 2027 |
| Blessing Muzarabani | Islamabad United | Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL) | 2-Year Ban | Through 2028 |
| Status of Appeal | Apology Accepted | No Appeal Recorded | Penalty Reduced | N/A |
Reports from ESPNcricinfo suggest that the PCB originally intended to mirror Muzarabani’s two-year suspension for Shanaka. However, the Sri Lankan captain issued a formal letter of apology and a plea for clemency, which prompted the board to halve the duration of his exile.
In a public statement aimed at rehabilitating his image, Shanaka expressed profound remorse for his actions:
“I am deeply regretful of my decision to withdraw from the PSL. I offer my sincerest apologies to the people of Pakistan, the dedicated PSL fanbase, and the wider cricketing community. I recognise the prestige of this tournament and understand the disappointment my actions have caused. To the loyal supporters of Lahore Qalandars, I am truly sorry for letting you down.”
Despite the significant professional and reputational cost of choosing the IPL over the PSL, the move has yet to yield on-field dividends for the Sri Lankan skipper. While the Rajasthan Royals have already completed six fixtures in their current campaign, Shanaka has remained a spectator in the dugout.
The irony of the situation has not been lost on cricket pundits; by prioritising a lucrative IPL contract, the all-rounder has traded a guaranteed starting spot in Lahore for a peripheral role in Rajasthan, all while sacrificing his future eligibility in one of the world’s most competitive T20 leagues. As it stands, Shanaka’s gamble has left him with a tarnished record in Pakistan and no active playing minutes in India.
