“Stagnation Can End Careers”

After a series of widely acclaimed film scores that propelled Pritom Hasan to prominence well beyond his years, the musician has chosen to temporarily step away from playback singing. Now, following the release of “2nd Nayok”, a collaboration with filmmaker Nuhash Humayun, the composer-turned-actor is refocusing his attention on independent Bangla music, a space he describes as his creative home.

Reflecting on his decision to pause film work at what many considered the height of his popularity, Pritom explained that the choice had been under consideration for some time. Independent music, he noted, has always been central to his identity as an artist. He also acknowledged feedback from long-time supporters, many of whom expressed nostalgia for the stylistic direction of his 2023 extended play.

There was no single defining incident that prompted the shift. Rather, he described a gradual realisation that being confined to a narrow musical identity can lead to stagnation. In his view, repetition and external direction in creative output risk dulling artistic growth. While he rejected the notion that he had been typecast, he was clear that he did not wish to be instructed on what kind of music to produce.

The recently released “2nd Nayok” has attracted attention particularly for its visually distinctive music video, which Pritom says emerged from informal discussions with Nuhash Humayun. The pair, who share a close friendship, often find their casual meetings drifting towards creative brainstorming. The concept behind the project, according to him, revolves around the emotional experience of being sidelined—an idea he believes resonates with many people.

Casting choices for the video were made with similar intention. The team sought a fresh presence to embody the narrative, while also selecting performers with strong screen appeal.

Pritom also used the opportunity to highlight what he sees as the depth of talent within the Bangladeshi music and performance industry. He praised several emerging and established artists, noting that the creative ecosystem is already rich with potential. In particular, he emphasised the importance of nurturing independent musicians and allowing them space to develop their artistic voice.

Looking ahead, he expressed a renewed commitment to independent work, suggesting that maintaining creative flexibility is essential for long-term artistic survival. In his words, becoming creatively stagnant is one of the fastest ways to derail a career in music.
