A tragic head-on collision between two passenger buses in southeastern Bangladesh has claimed the life of a 19-year-old college student and left another person injured on the busy Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 7:30 am on Tuesday in the Chunti Police Camp area under Lohagara Upazila. According to police and eyewitness accounts, two intercity buses—one travelling towards Chattogram and the other heading towards Cox’s Bazar—collided directly on the highway, causing both vehicles to lose control and veer off the road.
The deceased has been identified as Sumaiya Jannat (19), a first-year undergraduate student at Chattogram Women’s College. She was the daughter of Maulana Arifur Rahman from the Puiichhari Union area of Banshkhali Upazila in Chattogram District.
Following the collision, Sumaiya sustained critical injuries while travelling on a bus operated by Poorbi Paribahan. Local residents quickly rushed her to the Lohagara Trauma Centre, but attending physicians confirmed that she had already died before arrival. One additional passenger was also injured and received treatment.
Medical officer Dr Saimun Siraj stated that emergency staff examined the young woman upon arrival but could not revive her due to the severity of her injuries. The injured passenger is currently under observation, though their condition has not been officially updated.
Police from the Dohazari Highway Police Station confirmed that both vehicles involved in the crash have been recovered from the scene. Authorities have initiated a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision, including whether speeding, overtaking, or mechanical failure contributed to the incident.
Preliminary observations suggest that the stretch of the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway where the accident occurred is particularly vulnerable to head-on collisions due to heavy traffic flow and frequent long-distance bus movements.
