Bangladesh kicked off their SAFF Championship campaign on a high note, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bhutan. Substitute forward Mohammad Ibrahim emerged as the hero of the match, tapping home the decisive goal in the second half to earn the host team three crucial group stage points.
From the opening whistle, Bangladesh adopted an aggressive attacking posture, seeking to break down Bhutan’s defensive block. Operating primarily through both wings, the hosts created several early openings to unsettle their opponents. However, a combination of resilient Bhutanese defending and off-target efforts—including missed opportunities by defender Bishwanath Ghosh—kept the scoreline deadlocked through the first half. As the period progressed, Bangladesh shifted their approach, constructing play through the midfield and testing the keeper with long-range attempts.
Statistical dominance underscored Bangladesh’s first-half performance. The hosts controlled 64 per cent of ball possession compared to Bhutan’s 36 per cent. Bangladesh registered 12 shots towards goal while restricting Bhutan to just four attempts. Despite the host nation’s offensive volume, both teams remained level in clinical accuracy, recording two shots on target apiece before the half-time break.
Maintaining their offensive tempo after the interval, Bangladesh finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute through a well-worked set-up inside the penalty area. A lofted cross found midfielder Shamit Shome, whose header looped high into the danger zone. Reading the trajectory quickly, Ibrahim flicked the ball into the net at close range, sparking celebratory cheers across the stadium.
Bhutan pushed forward in search of an equaliser following the setback, whilst Bangladesh sought to double their lead on the counter-attack. Neither side could capitalise on subsequent chances, preserving the 1-0 scoreline until the final whistle. Bangladesh will resume their group stage fixtures on 11 November against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, in a separate Group B encounter on the same day, India clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory against Pakistan.
