Sunamganj Youth Arrested Following Alleged Assault on Primary Student

Police have detained a 25-year-old man over the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl, a Class One pupil, in Sunamganj Sadar upazila.

The suspect, identified as Saiful Haque, was detained on Sunday afternoon following the reported incident. The girl’s father is preparing to lodge a case with Sunamganj Sadar Model Police Station, according to police and local sources.

Sources said a police mobile team was sent to the scene immediately after receiving information about the incident. Before officers arrived, local residents had reportedly caught Saiful and beaten him before keeping him detained. Police later reached the spot, took the injured suspect into custody and brought the situation under control.

The child was rescued from the scene and taken to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for medical treatment. The authorities have not disclosed further details about her medical condition.

Saiful Haque is the son of Samru Mia of Bade Sadakpur, locally known as Buristhal, in Mollapara Union of Sunamganj Sadar upazila. His permanent address is reportedly in the Naya Hasannagar area of Sunamganj municipal town.

After taking Saiful into custody, police brought him to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for initial treatment because he had sustained serious injuries in the alleged beating by local residents. Following medical treatment, he was taken back to the police station and placed in police custody.

The reported incident has sparked concern in the local community, particularly because the alleged victim is a young school-going child. Cases involving alleged sexual violence against children are treated as serious criminal matters, and investigations generally focus on protecting the child while establishing the facts surrounding the allegation.

The girl’s father is expected to file a formal complaint, after which police will begin the necessary legal proceedings. Investigators are likely to gather statements from those familiar with the incident and examine other available evidence as part of the investigation.

Local residents have expressed anger over the allegation. However, authorities are expected to ensure that the matter is dealt with through due legal process rather than allowing individuals to take the law into their own hands.

Police have not yet provided further details about the circumstances of the alleged offence. Saiful remains in police custody, while the formal case process is expected to proceed after the victim’s father files the complaint.

As the investigation is still under way, the allegation against the detained man has not yet been established in court. The suspect is entitled to due process under the law, while the authorities are responsible for ensuring the safety, privacy and welfare of the child throughout the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.
