Top Bangladeshi cricketer Tamim Iqbal has publicly criticised the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) over what he described as “disheartening” behaviour towards players, following a tense start to the domestic cricket season.
Earlier this week, several leading Dhaka-based clubs refused to participate in the domestic league, citing alleged irregularities in the BCB elections. The boycott caused delays to the commencement of the First Division League, which was originally scheduled to begin on time. Despite the tournament officially kicking off today with twelve teams, only one of the four scheduled matches has been played so far, reflecting ongoing disruptions.
The unrest escalated yesterday, even before the First Division League had formally begun. A protest unfolded at the BCB headquarters when players from boycotting clubs staged a demonstration during a trophy unveiling ceremony for participating teams. The cricketers held placards reading:
The players maintained their protest outside the BCB gates for several hours, drawing attention to the uncertainty affecting hundreds of professional cricketers. Later, a delegation of players met with three senior BCB officials in a bid to resolve the situation.
Tamim Iqbal, the former national team captain and left-handed opener, voiced his dismay over the board’s handling of the matter. In a Facebook post, he wrote:
“Cricketers are the largest stakeholders in Bangladesh cricket. Yet yesterday, many players were not allowed onto the field. Numerous players from different divisions had gone to the BCB to present legitimate demands, which is their right. Instead, they were stopped outside the gates.”
Although a small representative group was eventually allowed inside for discussions, Tamim emphasised that the treatment of many players remained “regrettable”. He added:
“As a cricketer, I felt compelled to protest against such conduct.”
The situation has raised concerns about governance and transparency within Bangladesh’s cricket administration, highlighting the ongoing tensions between players and the board.
