Tamim Iqbal Confirms Candidacy and Retains BCB Chair

On Thursday, 30 April, Tamim Iqbal, the head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ad-hoc committee and former national captain, addressed the media at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. During the press conference, he formally clarified his stance regarding his administrative role and his intentions for the upcoming board elections, dismissing any rumours of a potential resignation.

Administrative Restructuring and the Ad-hoc Mandate

The current leadership structure of the BCB was established following a significant intervention by the National Sports Council (NSC). On 7 April, the NSC dissolved the existing board of directors, which had been led by Aminul Islam Bulbul. In its place, an 11-member ad-hoc committee was constituted to oversee the board’s transition.

The primary mandate of this committee is to manage the day-to-day operations of Bangladesh’s cricket governing body while facilitating a democratic transition. The committee has been tasked specifically with organising and holding a general election within a strict three-month timeframe. Tamim Iqbal was appointed to lead this interim body, marking a transition from his storied playing career to a senior administrative capacity.

Intentions Regarding Election and Resignation

Tamim Iqbal had previously expressed his desire to contest the BCB elections. In his recent briefing, he reaffirmed this commitment, stating unequivocally that his current role as the head of the ad-hoc committee would not preclude him from running for a permanent position on the board.

Addressing questions regarding whether he would step down before the polls, Tamim stated:

“I have not personally considered resigning. I will certainly participate in the election. I shall follow whatever the constitution permits. I have not thought about resigning from the ad-hoc committee at all. From the very first day, I have maintained that I will contest the election.”

Furthermore, he emphasised the necessity of transparency in the electoral process. He noted that the committee is dedicated to upholding democratic standards, expressing his hope that a “fair election” would be conducted under the current interim administration’s supervision.

Key Details of the BCB Ad-hoc Committee

Category Details

Appointing Authority National Sports Council (NSC)
Committee Size 11 Members
Interim Head Tamim Iqbal
Primary Objective Organise elections within 90 days
Outgoing President Aminul Islam Bulbul

Future Proceedings

The trajectory of the upcoming elections is expected to be finalised during the next official board meeting, scheduled for Sunday, 3 May. This session is critical, as it is expected to yield the specific schedule and dates for the voting process.

Under the regulations set by the NSC, the ad-hoc committee must ensure that all constitutional requirements are met to maintain the legitimacy of the transition. Tamim’s insistence on following the board’s constitution suggests that the legal framework governing the eligibility of interim members to contest elections will be a focal point of the upcoming deliberations.

The move to an ad-hoc committee was seen as a measure to restore stability to the board’s governance. As the three-month deadline approaches, the focus remains on the transition from an appointed interim body to an elected leadership, a process in which Tamim Iqbal intends to remain a central figure.
