A significant transition has occurred within the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Following the resignation of the entire board led by Shammi Silva amidst allegations of corruption and mismanagement, the Sri Lankan government has established a nine-member ‘Transformation Committee’. The inclusion of legendary cricketer Kumar Sangakkara highlights a strategic shift aimed at restoring integrity and performance to the national sport.
The dissolution of the previous board followed a direct government mandate on Wednesday. To fill the administrative vacuum, a committee comprising diverse experts from sporting, legal, corporate, and political backgrounds was formed. While the committee features cricketing icons, a substantial portion of its membership consists of professionals from the legal and corporate sectors to ensure rigorous oversight.
The committee is chaired by Eran Wickramaratne, a former Member of Parliament and a prominent businessman. Wickramaratne, a senior politician from the main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), is understood to have stepped away from his political party roles to undertake this responsibility. He currently does not hold a seat in Parliament.
Upon his appointment, Chairman Wickramaratne issued a statement emphasising the integrity of the nine-member body. He outlined two primary mandates for the Transformation Committee:
Constitutional Reform: The immediate priority is a complete overhaul of the SLC governance structure. This involves the implementation of a new constitution designed to provide a robust and modern foundation for the sport. For years, the existing constitution has faced criticism for granting disproportionate power to ineffective cricket associations, which critics argue fostered an environment of corruption and inefficiency. To address this, lawyers Dinal Phillips and Upul Kumarapperuma have been tasked with drafting the new constitutional framework.
Athletic Excellence: The second objective focuses on on-field performance. The committee intends to establish a world-class infrastructure and an incentive model to strengthen national teams. The ultimate goal is to produce players capable of consistent world-class performance, thereby returning Sri Lanka to the pinnacle of international rankings.
The committee leverages the expertise of former international cricketers alongside legal professionals to balance technical knowledge with administrative reform.
| Name | Primary Role/Background | Expertise Area |
| Eran Wickramaratne | Chairman | Business and Governance |
| Kumar Sangakkara | Member | International Cricket / Strategy |
| Roshan Mahanama | Member | International Cricket / Match Refereeing |
| Sidath Wettimuny | Member | International Cricket / Administration |
| Dinal Phillips | Member | Legal / Constitutional Drafting |
| Upul Kumarapperuma | Member | Legal / Constitutional Drafting |
The history of Sri Lankan cricket has frequently been marred by conflict between the board and the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding political interference. Most recently, in 2023, the ICC suspended Sri Lanka’s membership due to government meddling in the board’s affairs.
Addressing these concerns, Wickramaratne assured stakeholders that the committee would operate with transparency and professionalism, maintaining full compliance with ICC regulations. While the specific duration of the committee’s tenure remains undisclosed, its immediate focus remains the stabilisation of the SLC.
