Tax Intelligence Recovers Tk 532 Crore

The Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has reported significant progress in detecting and recovering evaded taxes since the commencement of its formal operations in December 2024.

According to official sources, the unit has initiated scrutiny and investigation into more than 3,300 income tax files involving allegations of tax evasion up to April of the 2025–2026 fiscal year. These ongoing investigations have uncovered substantial discrepancies, with estimated tax evasion amounting to approximately Tk 7,000 crore across a range of individual taxpayers and corporate entities.

As a result of these enforcement efforts, the government has successfully recovered Tk 532 crore in previously evaded income tax, which has been deposited into the national exchequer through official channels. Of this recovered amount, Tk 414 crore was collected during the current fiscal year alone, indicating a notable acceleration in enforcement activity and compliance outcomes.

Authorities have stated that the evaded taxes span multiple assessment years and involve both individuals and companies. Following detailed investigations, many taxpayers have voluntarily deposited the outstanding amounts using government treasury challans after the irregularities were substantiated by the intelligence unit.

The establishment of the Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit is widely regarded as a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening tax compliance, reducing evasion practices, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability within the tax system. Officials believe that the unit’s work not only contributes to revenue recovery but also encourages broader adherence to tax laws.

A breakdown of the unit’s key achievements is presented below:

Indicator Figure
Cases under investigation 3,300+ files
Estimated tax evasion detected Tk 7,000 crore
Total recovered revenue Tk 532 crore
Recovery in current fiscal year Tk 414 crore
Operational start December 2024

Tax officials emphasise that further improvements in technological capacity and enhanced training of personnel could significantly increase the efficiency and scale of revenue recovery. Strengthening analytical tools and investigative expertise is expected to further reduce tax evasion and improve voluntary compliance among taxpayers.

Commissioner of Taxes (Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit) Dr Lutfun Nahar Begum stated that officers are working with dedication to identify and address tax evasion cases. She further noted that the unit’s activities will be expanded and intensified in order to strengthen the national economy through improved revenue collection and enforcement of tax laws.

Overall, the early performance of the unit suggests a growing institutional capacity to tackle complex tax evasion schemes and reinforce fiscal discipline within the country’s taxation framework.
