He died at Khulna 250-Bed General Hospital on Sunday night (1 November), where he had been transferred from Jashore Central Jail for medical treatment. His death was confirmed by Abid Ahmed, jailer of Jashore Central Jail, and Syed Hasan Ali, jailer of Khulna Central Jail.
According to Syed Hasan Ali, hospital doctors reported that Mamun had suffered a cardiac arrest. He died at approximately 8.20pm while receiving treatment. The body was subsequently sent to Jashore following the necessary formalities, he said.
Abid Ahmed said Mamun was being held as an accused in a murder case under prisoner number 5105/25. He became seriously ill on Sunday after suffering a cardiac episode, prompting the jail authorities to arrange his transfer to Khulna 250-Bed General Hospital for better medical care.
The Khulna jail authorities were informed of the transfer, and prison personnel were deployed at the hospital to maintain security while he received treatment.
Mamun was the son of the late Altaf Hossain Master and a resident of Baje Durgapur village in Jashore Sadar Upazila. He had worked as an English teacher at Laujani Secondary School in Jhikargachha, Jashore.
Marital disputes reportedly fuelled family tensions
Information provided by local residents suggests that Mamun had experienced repeated marital difficulties. He had married twice, but both marriages ended in divorce following domestic disagreements.
Around eight or nine years ago, he married Mithila, from Bhekutia village in Jashore Sadar Upazila. The marriage eventually broke down, and the couple divorced. He later married Rina, from Amritabazar village in Jhikargachha. That marriage also ended in divorce approximately six years ago.
According to local sources, Mamun believed his mother was responsible for the breakdown of both marriages. This reportedly became a recurring source of tension between mother and son. Residents said the disagreements had previously escalated into confrontations, including incidents of physical violence.
Residents report previous mental health treatment
Local residents also claimed that Mamun had been experiencing mental health difficulties amid prolonged family problems. Approximately three years before the killing, he was admitted to Pabna Mental Hospital, where he reportedly received treatment for between two and three months.
Neighbours said he had not been living at the family home regularly for a long period. According to their accounts, he returned to the village on 27 August after an absence of nearly five years.
Fatal attack took place in August
The killing occurred at around 5.30pm on Thursday, 27 August, at the family’s home in Baje Durgapur village, under Jashore Sadar Upazila.
According to local residents, an argument broke out between Mamun and his mother, Anwara Begum, 58, shortly after he returned home. Their disagreement reportedly centred on family matters and escalated rapidly.
At one stage, Mamun allegedly became violent and attacked his mother with a sharp boti, a traditional household chopping knife. The attack was so severe that her head was severed from her body.
Hearing screams, nearby residents rushed towards the house. By then, Mamun had reportedly dropped the weapon and fled the scene.
Police later arrested him in connection with the killing. A murder case was subsequently filed at Kotwali Police Station in Jashore, and he was remanded to Jashore Central Jail as an accused in the case.
The incident caused widespread shock in the locality, particularly because the accused was a schoolteacher and the victim was his own mother.
Mamun’s death means he will no longer face trial in person in the murder case. Any further legal steps relating to the proceedings will depend on the applicable judicial process. His death in custody, meanwhile, brings a new development to a case that had drawn considerable attention because of the brutal nature of the killing and the family circumstances surrounding it.
