Authorities in Ramganj have arrested a teacher and a student in connection with the death of schoolboy Mehdi Hasan, following an investigation into a suspected homicide at a residential school hostel. The suspects were formally produced before a local court on Monday, 22 June, as police continue to widen their inquiry into the incident.
According to police sources, the arrests were made as part of an ongoing investigation into a murder case filed on 18 June at Ramganj Police Station. The detainees include a residential hall superintendent and assistant professor of the Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan Academy, along with one student of the same institution. Law enforcement officials confirmed that identities have been partially withheld due to the sensitivity of the investigation.
The case stems from a tragic incident on 16 June, when the body of eighth-grade student Mehdi Hasan was recovered from the academy’s residential hostel. Police reported that the boy was found hanging, but initial observations indicated visible injuries on his body, raising suspicions of foul play rather than suicide. The discovery triggered immediate unrest in the surrounding area, with angry locals reportedly vandalising the institution’s main gate and several rooms.
Mehdi Hasan was the son of local businessman Zia Uddin, a resident of Sonapur Bazar in the same upazila. In the aftermath of the incident, Mehdi’s father filed a murder case on 18 June, naming the school’s principal and several unidentified individuals, numbering around ten, as accused.
Preliminary statements in the First Information Report suggest that the incident may have been linked to allegations surrounding a stolen mobile phone, reportedly an iPhone. Investigators believe that a confrontation or physical punishment related to the alleged theft could have escalated into fatal violence. Following public outrage and administrative scrutiny, the institution’s principal was subsequently removed from their position.
