Teenager Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Minor

Police in Gafargaon, Mymensingh, have apprehended a 14-year-old boy on charges of raping a five-year-old child. The suspect was taken into custody from his residence on Saturday night and was subsequently transferred to a juvenile correctional facility this Sunday following a court appearance.

Incident Details and Medical Care

According to the case statement and police reports, the incident occurred on the afternoon of 25 April. The accused, a Year 9 student at a local secondary school, allegedly lured the young victim to his home under the pretext of watching television.

In the days following the assault, the child’s physical condition deteriorated, leading to her admission to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on 27 April. She remained under medical supervision for two days before being discharged on 29 April.

Obstruction of Justice and Social Media Influence

Following the victim’s return from the hospital, the family reportedly faced external pressure regarding legal recourse. Local intermediaries allegedly attempted to settle the matter through an informal village arbitration (salish) and explicitly discouraged the family from contacting the authorities.

The situation changed when details of the assault began circulating on social media platforms, specifically Facebook. The resulting public attention prompted the victim’s father to proceed with formal legal action. He filed a case at Pagla Police Station on Thursday night, naming the 14-year-old as the sole accused.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) for Mymensingh, Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed that the suspect had initially fled the area to go into hiding in Chittagong. However, due to sustained police pressure and investigative surveillance, the teenager eventually returned to his locality.

Officers conducted a raid on Saturday night based on intelligence regarding his return, successfully executing the arrest.

Chronology of Events:

Date Event Description
25 April Incident occurs; victim lured to suspect’s home.
27 April Victim admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
29 April Victim discharged from hospital following treatment.
30 April – 1 May Local attempts made to resolve the matter via informal arbitration.
2 May Formal case filed by the victim’s father at Pagla Police Station.
3 May Suspect arrested at his residence following return from Chittagong.
4 May Suspect produced in court and sent to a juvenile correctional centre.

Judicial Proceedings

As the accused is a minor, the judicial process is being handled in accordance with the Children Act. Under Bangladeshi law, individuals under the age of 18 are processed through the juvenile justice system rather than adult criminal courts. Consequently, the suspect has been remanded to a correctional facility designed for minors rather than a standard prison.

The police have stated that the investigation remains active as they gather further forensic evidence and witness statements to substantiate the charges in court. Local authorities have reiterated that attempts to bypass the legal system through informal settlements in criminal cases of this nature are prohibited and may be subject to further scrutiny.
