The Silent Architect: Remembering Political Theorist Serajul Alam Khan

The history of Bangladesh’s liberation struggle, the evolution of its nationalist political consciousness, and its foundational state-building are profoundly intertwined with the actions of Serajul Alam Khan. Affectionately known as “Dadabhai” or “Dada” to his contemporaries, Khan was a wartime organiser, a political theorist, an author, and a critical undercover architect of the nation’s independence movement.

Early Life and Radical Origins

Born on 6 January 1941 into a middle-class family in the Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district, Khan spent his early years exposed to both academic and civic values. His father, Khorshed Alam Khan, was an Edinburgh-educated government official who retired as the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, whilst his mother, Syeda Zakia Khatun, hailed from a traditional Pir family. Khan completed his matriculation at Khulna Zilla School in 1956 and later attended Dhaka College from 1956 to 1958. Between 1958 and 1962, he read mathematics at the University of Dhaka, where his attention increasingly shifted from academic science to active student politics.

As the political climate of the 1960s intensified under the military regime of Ayub Khan, Serajul Alam Khan concluded that Bengali emancipation could not be achieved through mere constitutional reforms within the framework of Pakistan. He maintained that true liberation required the absolute establishment of an independent, sovereign nation-state.

The Creation of the Nucleus

Driven by this separatist vision, Khan, alongside fellow student leaders Kazi Aref Ahmed and Abdur Razzaq, founded a secret underground political cell in 1962 known simply as the Nucleus (later referred to as the Swadhin Bangla Biplobi Parishad). Historians recognise this clandestine group as the primary ideological engine that nurtured and propagated the concept of an independent Bangladesh long before it entered mainstream public discourse.

The Nucleus was systematically involved in designing the foundational symbols and strategy of the future state. The group designed the original flag of independent Bangladesh, selected Rabindranath Tagore’s Amar Sonar Bangla as the national anthem, and coined the definitive national slogan Joy Bangla. The network also conferred the honorific title “Bangabandhu” upon Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Wartime Strategy and the “Mystery Man”

During the run-up to the 1971 Liberation War, Khan served as the General Secretary of the East Pakistan Chhatra League from 1963 to 1965. He helped to shape the rhetoric of major mass movements, including the historic Six-Point Movement of 1966 and the Eleven-Points Programme. Alongside other members of the Nucleus, he formed the political wing known as the Bangladesh Liberation Force (BLF) and an armed wing named the Joy Bangla Bahini. At the request of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, this high command was later expanded to include Sheikh Fazlul Huq Moni and Tofail Ahmed, eventually becoming known as the Mujib Bahini during the nine-month armed conflict.

Khan was an expert strategist who deliberately chose to avoid public office and the media spotlight, preferring to direct historical events from behind the scenes. This calculated withdrawal from public view earned him the enduring moniker “Politics’ Mystery Man” (Rajnitir Rahasyapurush). His input extended to collaborating on the conceptual structure of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic 7th March speech in 1971.

Post-Independence Shifts and Later Years

Following the independence of Bangladesh, Khan’s ideological trajectory diverged from the mainstream ruling party. Advocating for the establishment of “scientific socialism”, he broke away to become the chief theoretician and mentor behind the formation of the Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) in 1972. His strategic planning was also heavily linked to the chaotic Sipah-Janata uprising (the National Revolution and Solidarity Day) on 7 November 1975.

Consequently, Khan faced extensive state opposition and was imprisoned on three separate occasions, spending nearly seven years in confinement between 1976 and 1981. During his periods in prison and underground hiding, he dedicated himself to the study of world history, philosophy, and political theory. In 1996, he served as a visiting professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the United States, where he co-authored academic material detailing alternative politico-administrative models.

Serajul Alam Khan spent his final decades completely removed from active electoral politics and power structures, maintaining his characteristically reclusive lifestyle. On 9 June 2023, he suffered respiratory failure and passed away at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at the age of 82. He was buried with state honours in his family graveyard at Alipur village in Begumganj, wrapped in his mother’s saree as per his final wishes. His theoretical writings and unorthodox political strategies remain a subject of rigorous study among historians and political scientists tracking the genesis of the Bangladeshi state.
