DHAKA — Law enforcement officials have apprehended one of the capital’s most notorious gang leaders, Tanim Reza Bappi, alongside four of his key associates during a coordinated operation in the Motijheel commercial district. A significant cache of illegal weaponry, including multiple high-calibre foreign firearms, was recovered during the raid.
Details of the high-profile arrests were disclosed during a formal press briefing on Saturday by the Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Mohammad Osman Goni. Acting on intelligence gathered through precise surveillance networks, police tactical teams swarmed the area on Friday, 17 July, neutralizing the cell before any armed resistance could be mounted.
During the operational debriefing, Additional Commissioner Mohammad Osman Goni revealed that the decisive breakthrough came during the post-arrest interrogation phase. Confronted with actionable evidence, the suspects disclosed the location of a clandestine operations hub used by the criminal network.
Following these admissions, a specialised unit conducted a thorough search of Bappi’s purported office premises in Motijheel. Officers uncovered three sophisticated foreign-made revolvers carefully concealed within the structure. The firearms have been sent to forensic ballistics experts to determine if they were discharged in recent high-profile shootings across the financial hub.
DMP officials underscored that this gang operated with a high degree of impunity. Their presence heavily disrupted commercial activities, extorted local businesses, and terrorised residential pockets within the Motijheel sector.
Bappi’s criminal profile reveals a deeply entrenched history of violent crime. Police records indicate that the gang leader faces at least seven active criminal indictments, which include multiple charges of attempted murder, extortion, and illegal arms possession.
A central point of concern raised at the police headquarters was the suspect’s history of exploitation within the legal system. Despite being apprehended by law enforcement agencies on numerous prior occasions for grievous offences, Bappi routinely managed to secure bail through intricate legal maneuvers. Once released back into the community, he systematically resumed his criminal syndicates and re-established dominance over his turf.
DMP analysts have linked the group to a sudden spike in urban violence over recent months. A meticulous review of local crime patterns shows that Bappi and his close associates were directly connected to the vast majority of shooting incidents, gang feuds, and protection rackets reported in the Motijheel area. Detective branches are now processing the four co-defendants to dismantle the remaining financial lifelines of the syndicate, while formal charges are being processed under the strict provisions of the Arms Act.
