Tragedy in Mymensingh as Dengue Claims Another Life

A forty-five-year-old woman has succumbed to dengue fever at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, highlighting a concerning surge of mosquito-borne infections across the region.

The deceased, identified as Shilpi Begum from Muktagacha Upazila in Mymensingh district, was admitted to the hospital on the afternoon of 14 October with severe symptoms of dengue fever. Despite intensive treatment, her condition deteriorated, leading to her transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she passed away on Sunday, 18 October. Hospital sources confirmed that her clinical condition was further complicated by pre-existing diabetes, alongside severe dengue manifestations including Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and Dengue Shock Syndrome. Her death brings the total dengue mortality count at the hospital to 34 this year.

Dr Mostafa Faisal, a physician serving at the hospital’s designated dengue ward, reported that 37 new patients were admitted with dengue symptoms over the preceding 24 hours. During the same period, 55 patients recovered and were discharged. Currently, 117 individuals remain under medical care in the hospital’s dengue units. Since January, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital has provided treatment to a cumulative total of 4,018 dengue patients.

The ongoing outbreak in Mymensingh reflects a broader pattern observed across Bangladesh, where seasonal monsoon rainfall and prolonged stagnant water create ideal breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Healthcare facilities across secondary and tertiary levels have faced continuous pressure due to high patient turnover and the complex medical needs of individuals presenting with severe complications. Medical experts continuously stress the critical importance of early diagnosis and prompt clinical intervention, particularly for patients with underlying comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, who face a substantially higher risk of developing critical complications like plasma leakage and dengue shock syndrome. Municipal authorities continue to urge residents to eliminate standing water around homes to disrupt mosquito breeding cycles.
