In a sweeping 24-hour operation targeting criminal activity across Dhaka, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 486 individuals and registered 49 fresh cases. The coordinated drive, conducted across multiple police divisions in the capital, forms part of the force’s ongoing efforts to curb urban crime, dismantle drug supply chains, and maintain law and order throughout the city.
According to an official press release issued on Tuesday by Md. Akhtar Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, officers from various precinct stations and specialist units carried out targeted raids over the preceding day. The operations led to significant seizures of contraband items, illegal firearms, and stolen property.
A division-wise breakdown of the operation highlights the scale of enforcement action taken across the capital’s administrative zones. Mirpur Division recorded the highest number of detentions, with officers apprehending 167 suspects. Tejgaon Division followed with 96 arrests, while Wari Division detained 50 individuals. Officers in Uttara Division took 42 people into custody, whereas Lalbagh and Motijheel Divisions each recorded 35 arrests. Romna Division detained 33 suspects, Gulshan Division arrested 24, and the Detective Branch (DB) rounded up four individuals during specialised operations.
Throughout the citywide raids, police recovered a range of incriminating evidence and illicit substances. The seized items include one foreign-made pistol, 10 kilograms of cannabis, and 17,216 Yaba tablets—a potent synthetic drug widely targeted by law enforcement agencies. Officers also seized 10 mobile phones and cash amounting to 13,770 taka, believed to be linked to illegal transactions.
In addition to the arrests and material seizures, police officers successfully rescued two victims during the drives. While the DMP confirmed the safe recovery of both individuals, detailed information regarding their identities or the circumstances surrounding their rescue has been withheld pending further investigation.
Senior officials confirmed that all suspects were apprehended during targeted operations within their respective station jurisdictions. Formal legal proceedings against the arrestee group are currently underway, with police preparing formal charge sheets and presenting the suspects before relevant metropolitan courts.
