A 38-year-old construction worker lost his life in the early hours of Sunday morning after being struck by an unidentified vehicle while attempting to cross the busy Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bhanga, Faridpur.
The victim, identified as Samar Ali, son of Abdus Sattar, hailed from Kuralchar village under Islampur Upazila in Jamalpur district. Samar was travelling alongside his colleagues in a pickup truck from Dhaka towards Khulna, where they were scheduled to carry out specialized piling work for an infrastructure project.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 4:30 am directly in front of the Bhanga Highway Police Station. According to local residents and fellow travellers, the group had pulled their vehicle over to the roadside to grab a brief breakfast after hours of continuous overnight travel. As Samar stepped out and attempted to walk across the highway from the southern lane towards the northern side, a speeding, unidentified vehicle travelling from Gopalganj towards Dhaka struck him violently.
The impact knocked Samar down, leaving him critically injured on the tarmac. His colleagues rushed to his aid immediately, lifting him into a vehicle and transporting him to the nearby Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. However, upon arrival, the attending emergency medical officers pronounced him dead on arrival due to severe trauma.
Confirming the incident, Touhid Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station, stated that law enforcement officers promptly launched an investigation into the crash. He noted that the victim’s body has been formally handed over to his relatives following the necessary legal formalities. Efforts remain underway to identify the vehicle involved, which fled the scene immediately after the collision.
The Dhaka-Khulna highway, particularly around the major transport hub of Bhanga in Faridpur, sees heavy traffic flow around the clock. High speeds during early morning hours, combined with reduced visibility before dawn, frequently make pedestrian crossings along these expressways extraordinarily hazardous. Law enforcement officials have initiated legal proceedings regarding the hit-and-run accident.
