Tragic Lightning Strike Kills Father and Son in Thakurgaon

A devastating lightning strike has claimed the lives of a father and his young son whilst they were working in a jute field in the Thakurgaon Sadar upazila. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, 15 July, at approximately 2:30 pm in Mohabbatpur Ganeshpara village, located under the Jamalpur union. The sudden double fatality has cast a deep pall of gloom over the entire local community.

According to local sources and family members, 55-year-old Prabhu and his 23-year-old son, Nimai, had gone to their family land near their house early in the morning to harvest jute. As the day progressed, the weather deteriorated rapidly. By early afternoon, dark clouds gathered, and a heavy downpour began. Before the two men could seek proper shelter, a powerful bolt of lightning struck the field where they were working, hitting them directly. Both individuals sustained fatal injuries and died instantly at the scene.

Neighbouring farmers working on adjacent plots rushed to the spot after hearing the deafening clap of thunder. They discovered the two bodies lying lifeless amidst the harvested crop.

Kobindra, a local union parishad member representing Ward 6 of the Jamalpur union, confirmed the tragedy. He stated that the father and son were working diligently in the field when the lightning struck. He added that the sudden loss of two working members of a single family has left their relatives entirely devastated and the village in mourning.

Lightning strikes represent a significant and recurring seasonal hazard in rural Bangladesh, particularly during the monsoon months between May and September. Farmers working in open agricultural fields are statistically the most vulnerable demographic. Experts regularly advise agricultural workers to monitor weather changes closely and seek immediate shelter in concrete structures or houses when thunderclouds begin to form.
