Train Derailment in Laksam Disrupts Dhaka-Bound Rail Services

A passenger train derailed in the Azgara area of Laksam upazila in Cumilla on Wednesday afternoon, leading to a temporary suspension of northbound train operations on the busy Chittagong-Dhaka route.

Three carriages of the Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli Express jumped the tracks at around 12:30 pm while navigating the Down line. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the immediate aftermath of the incident, offering relief to hundreds of onboard passengers and railway authorities.

Rajib Chandra Kar, Officer-in-Charge of the Laksam Railway Police Station, confirmed the details of the accident. He noted that while movement along the Down line toward Dhaka came to a complete halt, train services along the Up line remained functional, allowing southbound traffic toward Chittagong to proceed with caution.

The Karnaphuli Express is a vital commuter service connecting eastern regional hubs with the national capital. The derailment occurred near Azgara, a key section along the Chittagong-Dhaka corridor handled by the Laksam railway junction—one of the largest and busiest railway junctions in Bangladesh.

Railway emergency relief crews based in Laksam were dispatched to the site shortly after the incident to initiate salvage operations. Engineering units are clearing the damaged carriages, inspecting track alignment, and repairing the impacted rail infrastructure to restore double-track operations.

Delays are expected across several long-distance passenger services originating from Chittagong and regional stations as trains await clearance along the singular operational track. Railway authorities have launched a routine preliminary inquiry to determine whether mechanical failure, track displacement, or operational errors caused the derailment.
