One of the brightest figures in Bangladesh’s intellectual landscape, Emeritus Professor, distinguished writer, essayist, literary critic and social thinker Serajul Islam Choudhury celebrates his 91st birthday today.
Born on 23 June 1936 in the historic village of Bairakhali in Vikrampur, he has, over a long and remarkable life, established himself as a teacher, researcher, critic, translator, editor and a leading voice of progressive social thought.
After completing his Master’s degree in English literature from the University of Dhaka in 1957, he chose academia as his lifelong profession. From 1957 to 2001, he taught at the Department of English at the University of Dhaka with dedication, intellectual depth and scholarly commitment. Generations of his students now hold influential positions at home and abroad, reflecting the lasting impact of his teaching.
Alongside his academic career, Professor Choudhury has made a profound contribution to Bangla literature as an essayist. He has authored more than 110 books covering literature, culture, society, history, politics, education and philosophy. His writings are known for their analytical depth and critical insight, enriching the intellectual tradition of Bangladesh. Beyond essays, he has also contributed through translation, fiction and research-based works.
Since the 1970s, he has been a regular columnist in leading national newspapers and weeklies. His reflective and thought-provoking writings have been widely appreciated by both general readers and scholars. His column “Gachh Pathor” earned particular popularity and recognition among readers.
Even in his post-retirement life, he remains actively engaged in intellectual pursuits. As editor of the literary and cultural quarterly “Notun Diganta”, he continues to contribute to the development of critical thinking, cultural awareness and intellectual growth among younger generations.
Professor Choudhury is widely regarded as a thinker committed to equality, human liberation and social justice. His writings consistently reflect themes of emancipation from oppression, the pursuit of a just society, and the importance of human dignity. He remains a firm advocate of social transformation and moral responsibility.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to literature, education and culture, he has received numerous awards and honours. In 2022, he was awarded the Nazrul Award, marking another milestone in his illustrious career.
