The recovered explosive devices were later safely defused by a bomb disposal team at Madhubagh Field on Friday morning (30 October).
The arrests were made during a police operation in the Nayatola Chairman Goli area under Hatirjheel Police Station between 4am and 4.30am. One of the detainees has been identified as Jahidul Islam Monir, 20, while the other is a teenage boy.
According to police, the arrests followed an investigation into an explosion outside the former Ramna Police Station on 23 October. Officers examined CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas to identify those suspected of involvement in the incident.
After analysing the footage and gathering relevant information, investigators identified the two suspects and traced their whereabouts. Acting on the findings, police raided a house at 453 Nayatola Chairman Goli in the early hours of Friday and detained them.
During subsequent questioning, the suspects provided information that led officers to four additional cocktails inside the house. The devices were recovered and arrangements were made to dispose of them safely.
At around 8am, members of the bomb disposal team transported the explosives to Madhubagh Field, where they were neutralised under controlled conditions. Police personnel from both Ramna and Hatirjheel police stations were present during the operation to assist with security and the necessary procedures.
The recovery has added a new dimension to the investigation, as police are now examining the circumstances surrounding the possession of the four additional explosive devices and their possible connection with the earlier explosion.
The incident on 23 October had prompted an investigation to identify those responsible for the explosion outside the former police station. CCTV footage proved instrumental in helping investigators identify the suspects, while information obtained following their arrests led to the recovery of further explosive materials.
Confirming the arrests and recovery, Sheikh Zahidul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) for the Ramna Division, said the two detainees were currently in the custody of Ramna Police Station.
He added that further legal proceedings were under way against them.
Police have not disclosed whether other individuals are suspected of involvement in the incident or whether the recovered cocktails were intended for use in any further attacks. Those questions are expected to be addressed as the investigation progresses.
The recovery also highlights the potential risks posed by improvised explosive devices in densely populated urban areas. Such devices can cause serious injuries, damage property and threaten public safety, particularly when stored in residential neighbourhoods.
Investigators are continuing their efforts to establish the full circumstances of the explosion, determine the purpose of the recovered devices and identify whether anyone else was involved.
