Authorities have detained two individuals following an attempted attack and robbery targeting tourists in the Sundarbans, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to the Bangladesh Coast Guard, the suspects—Rajan Sardar, 25, and Ratan Sardar, 14—were apprehended during a special operation conducted later the same day. The information was confirmed by media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon.
The incident took place in the early hours of Monday (4 May), at approximately 4:00 a.m., when a group allegedly attempted to attack and rob tourists staying at the Sundari Eco Resort, located near Dhangmari Khal under Dakop Police Station in Khulna. The suspects reportedly broke the window grille of the resort to gain entry.
Resort authorities became aware of the intrusion and pursued the suspects, prompting them to flee the scene. The incident was subsequently reported to the Coast Guard.
Acting on the information received, Coast Guard personnel analysed CCTV footage and carried out intelligence surveillance. At around 5:00 p.m. on the same day, an operation was conducted by Coast Guard Base Mongla in the area adjacent to Dhangmari Khal. During the operation, the two suspects were detained on suspicion of involvement in the attempted robbery.
Both detainees are residents of Dakop in Khulna district. During preliminary questioning, they reportedly admitted to involvement in theft and snatching activities over an extended period.
Following their detention, the suspects were handed over to Dakop Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon stated that the Coast Guard remains vigilant in maintaining law and order in coastal and riverine areas, preventing smuggling, and ensuring public safety. He added that such operations would continue in order to maintain stability in the country’s security situation.
